This sculpture portrays a weathered cowboy ,who after years of trapping fur and guiding wagon trains, now watches over the cattle of a local rancher. Lemon has captured this weathered soul in authentic style as the man is outfitted with tapaderos on his stirrups and a quirt, or riding whip in hand. The gun he carries is a large caliber black-powder and ball weapon. Thus, you won't find any loops on his belt because he carries his powder in a brass bottle or small flattened cow-horn fitted with a brass spout.

How It's Made
This sculpture began as an original hand sculpted clay model by the artist. It was delivered to the Starlite Studios Foundry in California where skilled artisans sectioned it into a myriad of component parts for casting. A multitude of steps followed including hand tooling, metal plating, patina applications and extensive buffing. This process can take up to several weeks to complete. Like many of Starlite’s fine art mixed media sculptures. This piece is made from one or any combination of different materials. Including lost wax bronze, fine pewter, brass, copper, 24 karat gold vermeil and various hot torched acid patinas such as black nickel, rose copper, and turquoise, to highlight the sculpture.

About the Artist

David Lemon, a member of the prestigious American Indian and Cowboy Artists Association (A.I.C.A.), is a mesmerizing storyteller as well as an inspired sculptor. David’s family originally settled in Utah in 1848. Through the stories told by his father and grandparents, David developed a deep interest in the Old West. His parents encouraged him in his art, despite calls from his fifth grade teacher that young David was ignoring classroom activities and spending his time drawing cowboys and Indians.

Lemon’s sculpting career began his senior year in high school when he signed up for a ceramics class. All thumbs when it came to throwing pots, David’s teacher suggested he try his hand at sculpting the terra-cotta clay. His efforts earned him three scholarships. For the next twelve years, David served in the U.S. Navy and sculpted only as a hobby, slowly, freely developing his own unique style. In 1977, he entered a sculpture in the Utah State Fair. Taking first place honors, he gained the confidence he needed and launched his professional career as a sculptor.

In galleries and private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East, Lemon’s studies of the American experience speak proudly and passionately of the people who toiled and sacrificed to build a new nation.
