Stephen Herrero

Born in El Paso, Texas, in 1952, Stephen Herrero spent much of his early childhood on a horse ranch in rural Nevada. From an early age, his interests seemed to point him toward the artistic path he would eventually follow. An avid reader, Stephen immersed himself in books about Native American history and culture, developing a deep appreciation for the Native American understanding of and connection to the natural world. This early fascination would later become an important foundation for his art.

A largely self-taught artist, Stephen did not discover his talent for sculpture until he was nearly 30 years old. While living in a small logging town in Northern California, he encountered what he describes as the “wild magic” of chainsaw carving. He watched a talented chainsaw artist transform a massive redwood log into the figure of a Native American warrior, with the saw roaring and sawdust flying. In that moment, Stephen realized he had found his life’s work.

He quickly mastered the demanding art of chainsaw sculpture and later expanded his abilities into a variety of other materials, including clay, wax, bronze, wood, and stone.

For Stephen, the creative process often begins with the discovery of a distinctive branch, piece of wood, or slab of stone that captures his imagination. Back in the studio, he studies the material carefully, turning it repeatedly and examining every curve, texture, and natural line before deciding what form it will take.

As he carves, shapes, and sculpts, Stephen appears to see not only with his eyes but also through his hands. His strong yet sensitive touch allows him to explore each surface and evaluate the balance and accuracy of the emerging form. The finished sculptures reveal a powerful connection between his Native American and wildlife subjects and the natural materials from which they are created.

Words such as “balance” and “harmony” often come to mind when viewing Stephen’s work. These same qualities reflect the traditional relationship between Native American cultures and the natural world, as well as the respect for nature that Stephen believes is essential to preserving the environment.

From 1982 through 1989, Stephen worked as a self-employed artist, supporting a family of five through the creation and sale of one-of-a-kind sculptures. During this period, he continued to strengthen his artistic and technical abilities by attending college art and foundry courses, as well as workshops led by other professional artists.

He became highly skilled in clay and wax modeling, mold making, bronze casting, wood carving, and stone sculpture. Stephen was also associated with the Southwest Sculptors Association, the National Wood Carvers Association, and the California Carvers Guild. His work was exhibited and sold through galleries and fine-art exhibitions throughout the American Southwest.

In 1987, Stephen designed his first successful collectible gift line for a major Southern California giftware manufacturer. Through his close involvement with the company, he gained valuable experience in technical production mold making, product assembly, manufacturing, design, and product development.

The combination of Stephen’s artistic talent, production knowledge, and the strong commercial success of his designs ultimately led to the formation of Mill Creek Studios in 1989.
